August Full Sturgeon Moon Rises Tomorrow

The August Full Sturgeon Moon will rise tomorrow, Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

It will be the first of two supermoons in 2023, the other being the Blue Moon on August 30.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.

This makes the moon appear slightly larger and brighter than usual.

The Sturgeon Moon will be 222,023 miles (357,311 kilometers) from Earth's center, making it the second-largest supermoon of 2023.

The Sturgeon Moon is named for the sturgeon fish, which were once plentiful in the Great Lakes.

The name comes from the fact that this is the time of year when sturgeons are most easily caught.

If you're lucky enough to have clear skies, be sure to step outside and gaze up at the Sturgeon Moon tomorrow night.
